A Bit of Fun

Created website for Little Creek Fish and Chip Shop

Problem:
The Little Creek Fish and Chip Shop had no online presence, no facility for online orders and received at least 5 calls a week (often during peak times) asking about opening hours.
Action:
After suggesting the idea of a website to the owner, she got a quote for a professional website ($2000) before giving me approval to build the business' website. I built a simple, easily editable HTML website for the shop which included a link which enabled online ordering linked to the company's electronic order system.
Results:
The cost of the website including wages was $480, saving the owner $1520. On average 10 orders per Saturday night are now done by email, 3 local corporate businesses ordered catering within 2 months of the website's launch, business is up 7% since this time and there are now usually only one or two calls per week about opening hours. The owner commended me for the fantastic look of the site.
First Prize, Glenmeadow Heights Year 10 Science Competition

Problem:
The Glenmeadow Heights Year 10 Science Competition was open to all Year 10 Students from Schools around Glenmeadow Heights and provided prizes for the most "innovative and exemplary" science projects. There were 130 entrants in the competition.
Action:
As I knew the criteria for winning rewarded the most "innovative and exemplary" project, I felt a high profile topic where a difference could be made would be a great place to start. I conducted a survey of 90 people to see if people's actions and beliefs on environmental issues were always consistent with one another. The paper I submitted to the competition, "Flying to Bali to reduce emissions: an investigation of cognitive dissonance in environmentally-linked behaviour" included statistical analysis of the survey's results.
Results:
The study found a negative correlation between "environmental concern" and "environmentally-friendly action", suggesting hypocrisy amongst many who expressed concern about the environment. Strategies for aligning intentions and behaviour were suggested. The project won first prize in the competition and has been referred to a scientific publication.
